Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A wave of shock and grief gripped the Jagdishpur Muslim Pada area under Rajarhat police station on Monday morning after the body of a newly married, five-month pregnant woman was found hanging from a noose. The deceased has been identified as 19-year-old Meheg Ansari.
According to police, Meheg’s body was discovered in her in-laws’ room around 8:30 am. She had married Zakir Hussain, an online delivery worker, nine months ago after a love affair. Originally from the Jagadanga area, Meheg had moved to Jagdishpur following her marriage.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating the matter from all angles, including possible family discord and mental distress. Officers have seized Meheg’s mobile phone and collected other forensic evidence from the scene. The cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report.
Meanwhile, Meheg’s parents have lodged a formal complaint against her in-laws, accusing them of harassment. Police have started questioning the family members, terming the case extremely sensitive. The tragic incident has once again raised serious concerns about the mental health and safety of married women in domestic spaces.
